October 25, 2014 marked the first annual Global Day of Action for the Human Right to Health!
In over 60 countries around the world, more than 15,000 people took action. From rallies, candlelight vigils, focus-group discussions, teach-ins and a vast demonstration of solidarity on social media, the message was heard echoing across the globe.
In the UN Declaration of Human Rights, Article 25 is often called the Right To Health. It calls upon member nations to ensure that all people have an equal right to health. Obviously a complex issue, this includes the right to access health care services, including medicines!
The Access Our Medicine Team put together a collection of 25 Stories That Will Make You Stand up for the #RightToHealth. These stories focus on people affected by, and people taking action for, affordable medicine from around the world.
Here in Vancouver, we also joined forces with a local student group called Beneath One Sky. In the early hours of Saturday, October 25th, they hit the streets for their usual backpack run in which they distribute food and needed items to members of the Vancouver DTES community. Only this time, there was something a little different. Group members were dressed in orange, carrying bright orange signs and postcards with the message about Article 25 and the Access Our Medicine Initiative loud and clear!
Thanks for your effort in sharing this important work! We were honoured to participate in this moving, world-wide event.
